NEW LONDON, Conn. – It is with much sadness that we announce our mother, Glenice Lois Hodgson passed away peacefully at Bayview Health Care in Waterford, Conn. on Jan. 20, 2022. She would have turned 96 on Feb. 2. She was born in Hartland, to parents Lois and Frank Withee Jr. She was a long time resident of Cape Elizabeth and was so proud of the life that she led there.

She was a resident of Dexter, before moving to Bangor to attend Eastern Beauty School. She had the privilege of working at the B and D Beauty Salon in Brewer, owned by Alice Pinkham, for many years. There, she met many longtime friends. She eventually met her husband of 30 years, James C. Hodgson who was stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor. They married in 1967 and relocated to Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana in March 1968. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, they returned to Maine settling in South Portland and soon made their home in Cape Elizabeth. She was so proud of owning her own beauty salon in South Portland known as Glenice’ s Hair Fashions. In addition to hair design, she developed an interest in painting.

Mom started painting in 1973 when she met Alfred Fuller, a well-known seascape artist in oils, who was considered a master in his field. Later, Laura Camonita introduced her to romance watercolor. She studied seminars with Betty Denton, a nationally known artist from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She also had the pleasure of attending classes run by Marnie Souza of Cape Elizabeth.

She was predeceased by her husband James, of 30 years; her parents Lois and Frank Withee Jr.; brothers Clinton, Alton, Gordon and Frank Withee; and a granddaughter, Laurie Thorne.

She is survived by her sister, Joyce King; daughters Judith Persails, Candace Thorne, Deborah Chase and Glenice Poletti; grandchildren Tracy and Mark Altheide, Shari and Roy D. Thorne, Meghan Chase, Stephanie Amann, Alessandro, Stefano and Caterina Poletti; great-grandchildren Christopher Altheide, Keiya Bullock, Emma Grace and Chase David Amann; and many nieces and nephews whom she shared a close relationship. She is also survived by her beloved toy poodle, Napoleon.

There will be no service. She will be buried beside her husband, James, at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Condolences can be made through Hobbs Funeral Home in South Portland.
