SCARBOROUGH — As the only two seniors on a team starting six sophomores and two freshmen, Lindsey Poirier and Korinne Bohunsky are relied upon to do a little bit of everything for the Marshwood girls’ lacrosse team.

On Tuesday night against Scarborough, both were more than up to the challenge.

Poirier scored six goals and added two assists and Bohunsky chipped in three goals while also dominating the draw circle to lead the Hawks to an 11-6 victory in a game between two of the top teams in the SMAA at the Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex.

Marshwood improved to 6-2 and solidified its second-place position in the Western Class A Heal points, and Scarborough fell to 4-4 and remains in third.

“Scarborough is always tough competition,” Poirier said. “They’re a great team, they’re important so we really prepared for this game. To come to Scarborough and win is big for us.”

Poirier and Bohunsky used their height advantage to pass over and drive through the Red Storm’s man-to-man defense, winning free position chances and opening attacking lanes for the other.

That was especially true during a crucial 6-1 run for Marshwood in a 17:46 stretch that spanned both halves, when Poirier scored five times and also assisted on a Bohunsky goal.

“We know they’re two good players, but everyone else knows that too,” Marshwood Coach Bernie Marvin said. “But they are both incredibly unselfish, and that allows them in turn to be more dangerous.”

The Hawks led from the start as Bohunsky scored the game’s opening two goals.

Scarborough got to within 5-3 with 3:09 left before the break when Bailey Adams scored on a curl from behind the goal.

That’s when Poirier took over, picking up a ground ball on the resulting faceoff and using her speed to drive to the cage for a score, then adding another with 57.5 seconds left in the half on a fast break.

“Going into halftime with a 7-3 lead was great, but we couldn’t step back,” Poirier said. “We’ve really struggled with keeping the intensity up the whole game.”

It was no problem Tuesday as the Hawks scored four of the opening five goals after halftime to pull away.

Three of the four came from Poirier. Kaitlin Prince led Scarborough with three goals, and Adams added two goals and two assists.

Sammi Shoebottom also made 13 saves behind a defense that found it tough going all night.

“They’ve got a couple of really strong players on offense who are taller, and they were passing right over us,” Scarborough Coach Michaela Wipfler said. “Unfortunately we didn’t bring our ‘A’ game on defense today and they took the opportunity to get behind us a few times. We just had a tough time keeping them out.”
