Sen. Susan Collins’ recent suggestion on national television that she might be open to considering Donald Trump for another term as president left me aghast. For someone who claims careful deliberation in her legislative actions, to even consider that Trump might – in any way – serve in the best interest of our country is totally misguided, to say the least.
How else can such a proposition be understood other than as party loyalty of the worst possible sort? A former president who incited mob rule and still is working to gather support for overthrowing an election represents a frightening candidate.
If Sen. Collins cannot condemn such behavior and criticize anyone who engages in such appalling schemes, I would hope that she would at least publicly distance herself from any indication that she would lend approval to Donald Trump returning to the presidency.
