BASEBALL
Niko Kavadas went 3 for 3 with two walks and homered for the second straight day, Nick Yorke also had three hits and scored three runs, and the Portland Sea Dogs finished with 17 hits Saturday night in a 10-7 Eastern League victory over the Akron RubberDucks at Akron, Ohio.
One night after CJ Liu pitched the sixth no-hitter in franchise history, the Sea Dogs held Akron hitless until the sixth inning, when Portland’s third pitcher of the game, Brendan Cellucci, gave up a two-out RBI single by Julian Escobedo.
Kavadas, Matthew Lugo and Phillip Sikes all drove in two runs. Portland had five steals, including three by Corey Rosier, who swiped home in a three-run first inning as part of a double steal with Yorke.
COLLEGES
MEN’S BASKETBALL: LeBron James’ oldest son, Bronny, says he will play basketball at the University of Southern California in the fall.
Bronny James abruptly announced his much-anticipated decision on social media, about two hours before his father’s Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Golden State Warriors in Game 3 of their second-round playoff series.
James, 18, was a McDonald’s All-American just like his father, but he was among the few uncommitted elite high school basketball prospects heading toward the summer.
GOLF
PGA: Wyndham Clark shot an 8-under 63 in the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, putting him in position for his first PGA Tour win.
Clark, 29, has a two-shot lead over Xander Schauffele going into the final round, with a 16-under 197 total. Schauffele shot 64.
Adam Scott and third-round co-leader Tyrrell Hatton were tied for third at 11 under.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Julien Guerrier will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Italian Open at Guidonia Montecelio, Italy.
Guerrier carded eight birdies and three bogeys in a 5-under 66.
He had a one-stroke advantage over French compatriot Romain Langasque, who set a new course record with a 62, and Poland’s Adrian Meronk.
AUTO RACING
NASCAR: William Byron scraped the wall in practice at Kansas Speedway, then set the fastest time in qualifying, and will be joined on the front row by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson for Sunday’s Cup Series race.
Byron turned a lap of 179.206 mph to earn his second pole of the season and the 10th of his career – all of them at different tracks. The trick now is to turn that first-row starting spot into a victory at Kansas, where he got his first win in the Truck Series but has never finished better than sixth in NASCAR’s top series.
FORMULA ONE: Sergio Perez will start from the pole at the Miami Grand Prix, where he has been given clearance to race for both the win and the championship.
Perez trails Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen by just six points in the championship standings, and team boss Christian Horner vowed in Miami to allow the drivers to race for the title. Verstappen, the two-time reigning F1 champion, and Perez each have two wins this year as Red Bull has swept all four races and finished 1-2 three times.
SOCCER
MLS: Bobby Wood scored a first-half goal, DeJuan Jones found the net in the second half, and the New England Revolution won 2-0 at Toronto FC.
Wood staked New England (7-1-3) to an early lead when he scored unassisted in the 19th minute.
Jones added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute, unassisted.
ENGLAND: Two first-half goals from Ilkay Gundogan lifted Manchester City to a 2-1 win at home against relegation-threatened Leeds, extending the defending champion’s lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table to four points.
• Mohamed Salah’s 100th goal at Anfield underpinned Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Brentford.
The Merseyside club’s sixth straight win moved it to within a point of fourth-place Manchester United, still with a shot of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
• Harry Kane’s first-half header helped Tottenham beat Crystal Palace 1-0 and keep alive their faint Europa League hopes.
Kane’s goal moved him ahead of Wayne Rooney into second place on the league’s all-time scorer list with 209.
• Toti Gomes’ goal sealed a 1-0 win for Wolverhampton at home against Aston Villa.
Wolverhampton moved 10 points above the relegation zone while also delivering a blow to Villa’s hopes of qualifying for the Europa League.
• Chelsea snapped a six-game losing streak by winning 3-1 at Bournemouth to earn its first points since Frank Lampard returned as interim manager.
SPAIN: Rodrygo scored twice to lead Real Madrid to its first Copa del Rey title in nearly a decade, overcoming Osasuna 2-1 in the final at Seville, Spain.
TENNIS
MADRID OPEN: Second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka beat top-ranked Iga Swiatek 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reclaim the Madrid Open title.
Sabalenka lost to Swiatek in the Stuttgart final two weeks ago and had never previously taken a set against her Polish rival in three clay-court meetings.
But the Belarusian broke Swiatek four times as she won her tour-leading third title of the season and 13th of her career, including her second in the last three years in Madrid.
• The WTA Tour says American player Amanda Anisimova, 21, plans to take an indefinite break from tennis, citing burnout and concerns for her mental health.
“I’ve really been struggling with my mental health and burnout since the summer of 2022,” she wrote on Instagram on Friday. “It’s become unbearable being at tennis tournaments. At this point, my priority is my mental well-being and taking a break for some time. I’ve worked as hard as I could to push through it. I will miss being out there, and I appreciate all the continuous support.”
Anisimova reached the 2019 French Open semifinals after beating reigning champion Simona Halep at age 17 – the youngest woman to get that far at a major since 2006.
But later that year, just prior to the U.S. Open, her father and longtime coach Konstantin died at age 52 from a heart attack.
Anisimova, currently ranked No. 46, reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon a year ago, upsetting Coco Gauff. She twice reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and beat defending champion Naomi Osaka at the 2022 event in Melbourne. She has two WTA singles titles.
