A student who attends middle school in Yarmouth has been diagnosed with viral meningitis.
Superintendent Andrew R. Dolloff notified parents Wednesday in a letter that a student at Frank H. Harrison Middle School is being treated for the illness, and that the Yarmouth School Department is taking steps to safeguard students.
The facilities maintenance staff is “redoubling efforts to clean surfaces such as table tops, door handles, restrooms, and locker rooms,” he said.
Seven cases of viral meningitis have been reported in three York County school districts this fall. No cases of bacterial meningitis, a more serious form, have been reported.
Viral meningitis is the most common type. Most people recover without treatment. Symptoms may include fever, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to bright light, sleepiness, vomiting, lack of appetite or lethargy.
Dolloff said the Yarmouth student was diagnosed by a Portland physician and he sent the letter Wednesday because so parents would have accurate and up-to-date information.
