EUSTIS — Two people were seriously injured early Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash on The Arnold Trail Road off state Route 27 in Eustis, while three were later taken into custody, according to police.

Maine State Police and Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash, finding one of the vehicles was headed north while transporting undocumented individuals.

Luis Kleber Mayancela-Yunga, 28, of Biddeford was driving a 2010 GMC van north with four passengers around 8:28 a.m. when he lost control on black ice, said Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols.

Jean-Francois Brassard, 26, of Sherbrooke, Quebec struck the van while driving south in a 2016 Toyota Rav4.

Two of the van’s passengers were seriously injured and were transported to Central Maine Medical Center, Nichols said.

Nichols said Mayancela-Yunga’s passengers were all from Ecuador, three of whom were undocumented, and were taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol.

Route 27 in the Eustis Village Road area was closed from the time of the crash to 12:32 p.m. when one lane was reopened to traffic. Traffic has since resumed.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Sunday that the two injured in the crash are expected to survive.

None of the van’s occupants were wearing seatbelts, Moss said.

A spokesperson from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection was not available as of Sunday afternoon.

Nichols said the crash investigation was handed over to Maine State Police.
