Portland police say a man whose body was found Saturday in Deering Oaks died of an apparent drug overdose.
The 41-year-old man, whom police didn’t identify, was found Saturday afternoon near the park’s northwest corner.
Confirmation of the cause of death depends on toxicology tests by the state Medical Examiner’s Office. There were no signs of any crime.
Police had stepped up patrols in the area over the summer after several opiate overdoses in Deering Oaks and in response to complaints from visitors who discovered used needles in the park. The city also installed a needle disposal box in Deering Oaks near the playground to reduce the likelihood needles would show up where children play.
