Waterboro firefighters are back on the scene of a fire that destroyed a farmhouse.
The fire was reported just after 6 p.m. Sunday in a farm house at 209 Ossipee Hill Road that was believed to be around 100 years old. More than 60 firefighters from Waterboro and surrounding towns worked to contain the blaze.
Crews returned Monday morning to put out hot spots and investigate the cause of the fire.
Officials say all eight occupants of the house – including six children – made it out safely and several pets were rescued. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford.
Fire officials say the fire began behind the home and spread to an attached barn. The cause remains under investigation, but a propane grill near the barn likely contributed to the fire, according to fire officials.
The home is a total loss and the residents are staying with family, according to officials.
