Printing Press Apprentices

The Portland Press Herald is hiring Apprentices to join our press room on both the day and night shifts. Apprentices will learn all aspects of running and maintaining our printing presses in South Portland. After successful completion of a two-year training program, Apprentices will become Journeymen Press Operators. This is a paid apprenticeship program.

Essential Job Functions:

– Apprentices will learn all areas of the Pressroom and Platemaking operations, including:

– Prepping rolls of paper

– Setting rollers in the press

– Standard maintenance of press equipment

– All functions to work on the press, folders and press controls

Our Ideal Candidate has:

– Mechanical aptitude and understanding

– Previous experience working with machinery

– Attention to detail

– Ability to work nights – including Saturdays

– Works safely and understands safety procedures, including LOTO and Hazard Communication

– Willingness to learn

Physical Demands:

This is a physically demanding job requiring lengthy time standing, bending, stretching, lifting pushing and climbing. Should be able to occasionally lift 100 lbs. in a team lift setting, and 25-50lbs regularly. Pushing of rolls of paper of 1000 lbs regularly.
