SOUTH PORTLAND — Tappan Fitzgerald II has resigned from the District 5 school board seat, triggering a process to fill the post for one year until an election is held in November 2017, City Clerk Emily Scully announced Wednesday.

Fitzgerald submitted a resignation letter Monday citing personal reasons for leaving the post before his three-year term ends in December 2017, Scully said. Because the Nov. 8 municipal ballot has already been set, the City Council will appoint a District 5 resident to fill the seat in the interim.

Scully invited any District 5 resident interested in filling this temporary post to submit an application, a letter of intent and a resume to her office by Oct. 4.

To qualify, an appointee must also be a registered voter and remain an inhabitant of the city while in office.

Appointees also must comply with all applicable policies outlined in the Master Policy Book of the South Portland School Department, including school board member ethics.

The Council plans to interview candidates at a special workshop on Oct. 17 and appoint someone at its regular meeting immediately following.

An application can be downloaded from the city’s website under “Board and Committees” or Scully will mail one upon request.
