From March 2013 to February 2014, the most common crimes in Portland were assaults and burglaries, including burglaries of commercial buildings, residential buildings and motor vehicles. Assaults include simple assaults and aggravated assaults – those involving use of a weapon or serious injury. Data compiled by the Portland Police Department from incident reports and requested by the Portland Press Herald/ Maine Sunday Telegram show that those types of crimes rose in the summer and early fall. The number of assaults rose between 1 and 2 a.m., and again between 7 and 9 p.m. each night.
