1960: More than 1,000 campers passed through Union Station on this June morning and several more special trains were scheduled for the next day. But the initial volume of campers was barely what it was the previous year. Airlines and bus companies had picked up the slack. "The kids don't even wave at the trains any more," said one man sadly at Union Station.

1940: This group of campers, pictured at Union Station in Portland, is ready to play tennis, shoot arrows and probably get into a little mischief.
1961: Girls from Cumberland, Portland, Falmouth and Gray are shown on an overnight camping trip at Camp Souci on Cousins Island. The girls who are doing the cooking were intermediate scouts. The cost for eight days of camp activity was $9. That amount included bus transportation to and from the camp each day, the food for their overnight stay, insurance and milk.
