The moon turns orange during a total lunar eclipse behind the CN Tower and the skyline during moonset in Toronto Oct. 8, 2014. The eclipse is also known as a "blood moon" due to the coppery, reddish color the moon takes as it passes into Earth's shadow. The total eclipse is the second of four over a two-year period that began April 15 and concludes on Sept. 28, 2015. The so-called tetrad is unusual because the full eclipses are visible in all or parts of the United States, according to retired NASA astrophysicist Fred Espenak.

Lightning strikes over Lake Maracaibo in the village of Ologa, where the Catatumbo River feeds into the lake, in the western state of Zulia Oct. 23, 2014. This year the Catatumbo lightning was approved for inclusion in the 2015 edition of Guinness World Records, dethroning the Congolese town of Kifuka as the place with the world's most lightning bolts per square kilometer each year at 250. Scientists think the Catatumbo, named for a river that runs into the lake, is normal lightning that just happens to occur far more than anywhere else, due to local topography and wind patterns. A lady crab is seen along the Fire Island National Seashore on one side of a breach in Fire Island, New York, Oct. 27, 2014. Superstorm Sandy tore two breaches through the long barrier island that lies across the murky Great South Bay from New York's Long Island. The gap that remains open is allowing the Atlantic Ocean to surge in and out of the bay, and the water near the breach is cleaner, with more plentiful fish, than it has been in decades. Reuters
