Letter to the editor: If shelter users have money, let them pay for services

Re: “City knew of shelter users’ big bank accounts” (Feb. 25): I am all for helping anyone who is in dire need of city- or state-funded services. However, when those same individuals have substantial savings that are not used for their needs, and the city just hands out the money requested without making any attempt […]

Letter to the editor: Students have it right, pledge is optional

Re: “Freedom of speech, backlash of anger over four words at South Portland High School” (Feb. 24): Kudos to Lily SanGiovanni and her friends at South Portland High School for pointing out that saying the Pledge of Allegiance is optional. The Supreme Court guaranteed the right of students to refrain from saying the pledge in […]

Letter to the editor: Freedoms have been costly; students should want to say a pledge

After reading the front-page article in the Feb. 24 Press Herald (“Freedom of speech, backlash of anger over four words at South Portland High School”), I was not surprised about the “backlash of anger” that was stirred. My question to Lily SanGiovanni and her two supporters is: Do you even know what freedom of speech […]

Letter to the editor: ‘Hit at tax time’ was not a realistic portrayal of ACA

The headline read “Many ACA enrollees taking a hit at tax time” (Page 1, Feb. 27). Next time the story should be portrayed more realistically with the headline, “Many Mainers make more money than expected and still enjoy single-digit health insurance premiums!” Let’s keep this in perspective, people. Letter to the editor: Newspaper ignored science in stories on bisphenol-A

Please be fair and do some thorough reporting on issues regarding the use of chemicals in Maine. You report on comments by mothers, doctors, activists and environmentalists but seldom scientists. This paper has implied that chemicals like bisphenol-A are toxic but have not been banned in Maine because of chemical lobbyists in the LePage administration […]

Letter to the editor: Students are promoting freedom of thought and speech

I fully support what Lily SanGiovanni, Gaby Ferrell and Morrigan Turner are trying to achieve at South Portland High School regarding the Pledge of Allegiance. I actually applaud whatever Maine Legislature that made sure students were “not forced to say” the pledge. Loyalty is not something that should be forced, but freely given. When “loyalty […]

Letter to the editor: Comedian deserves praise for his personal insights

I would like to commend George Hamm for sharing his emotional and very personal experience of living with chronic anxiety (“For comedian George Hamm, stage has been a way of life and a safe place,” Feb. 15). I am hopeful that his story will educate and enlighten people to the devastating effects of this condition. […]

Letter to the editor: Students raised valid pledge questions

Re: “Freedom of speech, backlash of anger over four words at South Portland High School” (Feb. 24): Lily SanGiovanni, senior class president of South Portland High School, did a service to her school by being brave enough to invoke her right to educate her colleagues as well as the citizenry of South Portland by her […]

Letter to the editor: If you value this country, a pledge is appropriate

Once again, you got it wrong with your support of South Portland students who refuse to recite the Pledge of Allegiance (“Our View: South Portland students give lesson in patriotism,” Feb. 26). The pledge is not just about the flag. The words call for “allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and […]

Letter to the editor: Presidents Day taken over as a time to pitch sales

On Feb. 22, the birthday of George Washington, I once again saw nothing in any newspaper to acknowledge this historical day. How soon we forget! George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are the greatest figures in the history of this great nation. Even most calendars don’t note the events on Feb. 12 and 22. That’s shameful! […]
