ORONO – Alex Calbick scored on a squeeze bunt by Pat Thibodeau in the bottom of the 10th inning as the University of Maine completed a weekend sweep against Hartford with a 3-2 victory in an America East baseball game Sunday at Mahaney Diamond.

Maine (26-21, 15-5 America East) outscored the Hawks (4-41, 1-18) 28-8 during the three-game series while stretching its winning streak to 11 games.

Stephen Perakslis (5-4) struck out six and gave up two hits and a walk in 52/3 scoreless innings of relief for the win.

The Black Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Fransoso drew a walk, advanced to third on a single by Joey Martin and scored on Tyler Patzalek’s fielder’s choice grounder.

After Hartford moved ahead 2-1, Calbick scored the tying run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch.

NESCAC FINALS CANCELED: Bowdoin was denied a chance to win the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship when the finals were rained out at Medford, Mass.

Bowdoin (24-14) was scheduled to play Tufts (26-7-1) and needed two wins over the Jumbos to claim the title. But heavy rain prevented the first game from starting, and Tufts was declared the champion after going 2-0 in the first two days of the tournament, including a 4-2 win over Bowdoin in 12 innings Saturday.

Officials couldn’t extend the tournament because the field for the NCAA Division III tournament is due to be announced today. The Jumbos will receive the conference’s automatic bid, while Bowdoin will wait for a potential at-large bid.
