Berwick Academy’s “Odyssey of the Mind” team is heading home today with a first-place trophy from the 2011 World Finals.

Competing against 38 other teams – including squads from Japan, Mexico and India – the Berwick Academy sixth, seventh and eighth graders tallied the most points in the Extreme Mousemobile category.

That involves coming up with a vehicle powered only by a mousetrap that can perform various tasks, such as hitting a target, stopping in a particular place and following a straight line. Berwick Academy’s vehicle used the power of the mousetrap’s spring to pull a string which then transferred its energy to an axle via a pulley.

Another of the 27 Maine teams that went to the World Finals, Massabesic High School, took home a special courage award for continuing to compete after a team member, Casey Irish, died in a car crash late last fall.

Casey’s mother, Mary Ann Irish, chose to continue to co-coach the team after the tragedy.

The World Finals were held at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
