AUGUSTA — The Maine Senate Republicans have unveiled a copy of the stolen state welcome sign as a symbol of their legislative accomplishments.

The welcome sign along the turnpike in York County was stolen after the slogan “Open for Business” was added to it. Police are looking for the sign.

In the meantime, majority Republicans have made up a cardboard replica of the sign as a symbol of their efforts to improve the state’s business climate and encourage job creation. It hangs in the State House Senate Republican office.

Republicans cite passage of bills to reduce regulatory burdens and overhaul health insurance. They also hope to negotiate tax cuts in the new state budget.
