YARMOUTH – Ian Edgecomb may have earned himself a new nickname.

Considering how he has started the season, Game Winner sounds about right.

For the second straight game, Edgecomb — known as the Trash Man for scoring goals that are rarely highlight-reel worthy — got the winner in dramatic fashion as Yarmouth topped Falmouth 10-9 in overtime in a Western Maine Conference boys’ lacrosse game Wednesday night.

“It feels great but it’s not just me, it’s the whole team,” said Edgecomb, who scored the winner in the final minute of regulation against North Yarmouth Academy in the opener Saturday. “I was just in the right place at the right time again.”

The winner came 22 seconds into overtime. Yarmouth gained possession off the faceoff. Quick passes from Ethan Cyr to Christian Henry moved the ball into scoring position before Henry found Edgecomb at the edge of the crease.

“When we execute we’re very successful and that last goal was an example,” said Yarmouth Coach David Pearl. “We work on transition all the time.”

There was little separating the teams through regulation play that featured eight ties but only two lead changes, both in the opening half.

Yarmouth (2-0) took a 2-0 lead after less than four minutes but the first period ended 3-3.

The Yachtsmen (0-1) scored two of the first three goals of the second period to move into their only lead, 5-4. Yarmouth got the final two goals of the period, one by Cyr with 34.4 seconds remaining in the half for a 6-5 lead.

“I think we struggled a little bit and never really did get on track,” said Pearl. “Every time I felt we were close to getting on track they’d come back and we would make a mental mistake.”

The teams traded goals in the third quarter, leaving Yarmouth ahead 8-7.

Chris Samaras of the Yachtsmen made it 8-8 two minutes into the fourth quarter. Seven minutes later Cyr scored his second to give the Clippers a 9-8 lead. That lasted until Brad Gilbert got his third with 42.7 seconds left in regulation.

“Yarmouth deserved it,” said Falmouth Coach Mike LeBel. “They outworked us from start to finish. I thought we were going to figure out a few things offensively and defensively, but we just weren’t able to make the proper adjustments.”

Brady Neujahr paced the Clippers with three goals. Bryce Kuhn had three for Falmouth.
