Coffee By Design plans to renovate the former Goodwill Industries building in East Bayside and create a new headquarters in the quickly changing Portland neighborhood.

According to building permits filed with the city in March, Coffee By Design will renovate the 44,700-square-foot building at 11 Diamond St. Prospect Design and Hemesphere Design have been contracted to work on the project.

Construction costs are expected to be $290,000, according to the permits.

Coffee By Design, founded in 1994 in Portland, could not be immediately reached for comment. The company has retail locations in Portland and at L.L. Bean’s Freeport headquarters as well as a small roastery on Washington Avenue in Portland.

East Bayside, the neighborhood bounded by Congress Street, Franklin Street, Washington Avenue and Marginal Way, has seen a surge of development in the past two years.

“It’s part of the further transformation of East Bayside,” said Jed Rathband, a resident and member of the neighborhood organization. “It’s adding more jobs, more diversity and economic strength to the neighborhood.”

The neighborhood, which includes a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses, is home to several businesses that have opened in the past two years, including Bomb Diggity Baker, Tandem Coffee Roasters and Maine Craft Distilling.

“It’s the neighborhood with the most potential on the peninsula. If you want to be on the peninsula, it’s the last frontier,” Rathband said.
