I read the March 28 front-page article “Russia’s an outcast, but Portland group’s trip to sister city still on” in utter amazement. What part of “making a political statement” does the delegation to Archangel not understand?

Had they watched “The Rape of Europa,” shown at the Portland Museum on March 29, and seen old videos of Nazi German troops marching into Austria because it was a German-speaking country, they would have been stopped in their tracks by the similarity to Vladimir Putin’s troops marching into the Crimea and amassing troops on the eastern border of Ukraine because many people there speak Russian.

If the delegation has made many prior trips, then canceling this one at this time would have been understood as a protest. Shame on the delegation for not supporting the Ukrainian people against such blatant aggression.
