BURLINGTON, Mass. — State police say a Gloucester man has been arrested after a string of car crashes along 16 miles of busy freeway north of Boston, ending when he overturned a vehicle he allegedly carjacked.

Police said the two left lanes of southbound Route 128/Interstate 95 near Burlington Mall were closed for about an hour Friday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Police said Arthur Choate, 23, is being held on charges of car theft and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. It’s not immediately known if he has a lawyer.

Police said a hit-and-run crash was reported in Peabody around 3:15 p.m., followed by crashes involving seven other cars on the highway southbound.

They said Choate crashed his car, allegedly carjacked another one and rolled it in Burlington. He was arrested trying to flee that crash.
