Two top executives at the YMCA of Southern Maine left the agency this week by mutual agreement because they had become “a poor fit” for the nonprofit organization, the chief executive officer said Thursday.

Laurie Jo Ready, who was the chief financial officer, and Hildy Ginsberg, who was the executive director of the agency’s Portland branch, left the Portland headquarters on Wednesday.

“It was agreed together it was a poor fit,” said Helen Breña, CEO of the YMCA, which also has branches in Freeport, Biddeford and New Gloucester.

Breña declined to provide further details, but said neither woman had done anything illegal to warrant dismissal.

“We can’t really talk about personnel issues. It’s inappropriate,” Breña said.

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, spending by the YMCA of Southern Maine topped $8.9 million, outstripping $8.5 million in revenues by $411,000, according to the 2013 annual report posted on the agency’s website.

The YMCA of the USA will help the Maine agency identify existing staff members to fill the positions for an interim period and conduct national searches for replacements, Breña said.

Ready lives in Biddeford and joined the YMCA staff in May 2011, according to the agency’s website. Ginsberg lives in Scarborough and has worked for the YMCA for 16 years, initially in New York and Connecticut before coming to Maine in March 2008.

Neither woman could be reached for comment.

Their departures appear to have been sudden. Both women have work-based Twitter accounts and Ginsberg last tweeted as recently as 8 a.m. Wednesday about a bookmobile visit.

The YMCA of Southern Maine employs 400 to 500 people and provides fitness, social and housing services to about 28,000 people annually, Breña said.
