Fall is getting off to a balmy start, with Portland setting a record high temperature Saturday.

The National Weather Service said it recorded 84 degrees at the Portland International Jetport around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, topping the previous record high of 80 degrees, set at the airport on Sept. 27, 1948.

Meteorologist Michael Cempa said the warm, sunny weather will continue Sunday, but he thinks that the record high for the date – 82, also set in 1948 – is going to be safe because a sea breeze will likely bring slightly cooler weather to the coast. Inland areas are likely to hit the low- to mid-80s again, he said, while Portland will probably top out in the upper 70s to 80 degrees.

But that’s it for the 80s this week, Cempa said, with a cold front expected to drop down from the north. Portland might hit the low- to mid-70s before the cold front rolls through Monday, he said, and Tuesday will be near normal for this time of year, with a high around 60 under cloudy skies. There’s a slight chance of showers Monday night, he said.

Highs the rest of the week should be in the 60s, Cempa said, and it will continue to be dry.
