Two Portland men were arrested Tuesday in the burglary of a residence on Luke Street in Portland in which they were found hiding in the basement of the house.

Tyler I. Dias, 21, and Kevin S. McCarron, 22, both of Portland, were arrested Tuesday after Portland police received a 911 call from the mother of a 16-year-old girl who was home alone and saw two men coming to the house.

The two allegedly used a ladder from the house to get inside through an upstairs window. The girl locked herself in a closet and heard the men inside the home.

Police officers arrived at the house and escorted the girl to safety. Dias and McCarron were found hiding in the basement, police said, and were taken into custody. Both men were found in possession of stolen property from the home.

Dias and McCarron are charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and violation of conditions of release. Both men were out on bail in connection with previous charges when the burglary occurred. Dias was on bail for theft and McCarron for trafficking in prison contraband. Dias is also on probation in New Hampshire.

The men are being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland. They were scheduled to make an initial appearance at the Portland Unified Court on Wednesday afternoon.
