MONTPELIER, Vt. — A handful of the people connected with the Charlotte Central School who tested positive for tuberculosis earlier this year are declining treatment with antibiotics that can wipe out the infection before an infected person becomes sick, a Vermont Health Department official said Wednesday.

None of the 19 children and two adults who tested positive after a Charlotte school employee was found to have developed an active case of the disease earlier this year has shown symptoms and they pose no threat to others unless they do get sick, said Vermont epidemiologist Patsy Kelso.

All the children and adults who tested positive for TB were offered a nine-month course of treatment with antibiotics that would kill the TB bacteria. Kelso said “less than five” declined treatment.
