CHELSEA, Vt. – A former principal of Saco Middle School in Maine who was fired from the Tunbridge Central School in Vermont after being accused of having inappropriate contact with a child has pleaded not guilty.

The Valley News reported that Richard Talbot pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of engaging in a prohibited act involving an 11-year-old student.

He was originally charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, a felony. But Orange County State’s Attorney William Porter said the facts of the case merited the lesser charge.

Vermont State Police started investigating the 68-year-old Talbot of South Royalton in February.

The school board says Talbot was placed on administrative leave from Tunbridge Central School on Jan. 20 and fired March 2, after a personnel investigation was completed.
