A Biddeford man who killed his mother by running her over with his pickup truck last year was sentenced Friday to serve five years in prison for that crime and for an unrelated robbery as part of a plea deal in which a manslaughter charge was dismissed.

Shane Jones, 27, struck 49-year-old Kimberly Jones with the open passenger door of his truck last Nov. 23 as he backed the truck out of the driveway of his family home at 6 Brackett St. in Biddeford after arguing with his mother about money.

Jones pleaded guilty Friday in York County Superior Court in Alfred to charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Justice John O’Neil Jr. sentenced Jones in that case to serve three years in prison.

In the second case, Jones robbed a Big Apple convenience store in Arundel last Nov. 7 armed with an air gun that appeared to be a real weapon. He demanded that a store clerk give him money from the register and then fled with the cash, according to the York County District Attorney’s Office.

Jones pleaded guilty in the second case to a felony robbery charge and was sentenced to serve two years in prison.

The judge ordered that the prison sentences be served consecutively, for a total of five years. In the robbery case, O’Neil issued a total sentence of 10 years, but suspended eight of those years as leverage while Jones serves a three-year probation term after his release from prison.

Kimberly Jones, who was run over by her son’s pickup after she was hit by the door, died as a result of trauma to her head and chest. Jones drove off after hitting her and was arrested five days later in Sanford.

Before Jones ran her over, his mother had followed him and his girlfriend, Krista Randall, as they left the Jones family home. Kimberly Jones stood beside her son’s truck while the couple sat inside, Randall in the passenger seat and Jones behind the wheel, according to court records.

Jones’ sister, Shawna, who also lives at the house, told police she heard a “thud” and saw her mother lying face down in the driveway after her brother sped away in the truck toward Graham Street, court records show.

Jones’ attorney, Robert Ruffner, said Jones hit his mother by accident and has lived in deep remorse since.

“(Jones) has not felt anything but horrible about this at any point,” Ruffner said. “He couldn’t believe it happened.”

As conditions of probation, Jones is ordered to undergo substance abuse counseling, refrain from using alcohol, illegal drugs, dangerous weapons or firearms. He is also prohibited from entering the Big Apple store that he robbed.
