The Maine Warden Service is investigating the death of a fisherman whose body was discovered during the Memorial Day weekend submerged in a brook in Rainbow Township.
Authorities were notified around 12:30 p.m. Sunday that Darren Clement, 18, of Medford was overdue, said Cpl. John MacDonald, spokesman for the warden service. Clement had been fishing with his uncle and cousin. The three split up and fished separately, agreeing to meet later in the day. When Clement did not show up at the agreed-upon time, his family searched the stream but could not find him.
The Warden Service responded with wardens, aircraft and a canine unit. After searching throughout Sunday afternoon, Warden Paul Farrington and his dog discovered Clement’s fishing creel on the shore of the brook around 8 p.m.
MacDonald said Clement’s death remains under investigation. His body is being examined by the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
Rainbow Township is in northern Maine, near the southwestern edge of Baxter State Park.
