Library receives grant for energy improvements
The Bonney Memorial Library recently received a $23,992 grant from Grants to Green Maine, a partnership between the Maine Development Foundation’s Maine Downtown Center, Efficiency Maine and the Maine Community Foundation.
The funds will be used to provide energy improvements that will help reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency.
“This grant will enable Bonney Memorial Library to implement lighting upgrades, window upgrades and to install a solar electric system and heat pumps,” Jack Bash, Cornish Library Association treasurer, said in a news release.

Three schools benefit from TangerKIDS Grant Program
Tanger Outlet Centers raised $3,000 for three schools in York County as part of the shopping center’s TangerKIDS Grant Program.
This year’s recipients in York County are Sanford High School for cookware for culinary and nutrition programs, and Traip Academy for its community class program. Shapleigh School received three grants for the 8th grade Celebration of Knowledge; Seeing Stars, a specialized reading program; and Art History Resource.

Marcia Ciorra honored as exemplary school volunteer
Marcia Ciorra, a volunteer at Wells Elementary School, was recognized by the Wells-Ogunquit CSD as Exemplary Volunteer of the Year.
Ciorra and other volunteers were honored at an ice cream social in June. In the 2014-2015 school year, volunteers logged a combined 3,000 hours working in the school district.
“She goes above and beyond expected volunteering,” Maryanne Foley, community resource coordinator, said in a news release. “Even if it is not her child’s classroom, Marcia is always willing to help other teachers with special projects.”

Nominations being sought for Amanda Dempsey Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Amanda Dempsey Award presented by Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer.
The award, named in memory of Amanda Dempsey, is presented each year to a cancer survivor who has a passion for helping others with cancer. The recipient will lead Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer survivor walk along with Patrick Dempsey and his family on Oct. 17 in Simard-Payne Park. The award winner will also be honored at the Champions for Hope Celebration that night.

Participation in campaign brings in $1,250 for center
Spectrum Generations Coastal Community Center has received a $1,250 grant from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in the 13th Annual March for Meals campaign.
This year’s grants were made possible by Subaru of America Inc. and its seventh annual “Share the Love” event.

Walk raises nearly $17,000 for fight against liver disease
Liver Life Walk Maine held at Edward Payson Park in Portland raised nearly $17,000 in the fight against liver disease.
The event was hosted by Tracy Sabol of WMTW. One patient advocate in attendance was a young girl named Ann Ford, also our Liver Life Champion, who received a life-saving liver transplant in 2013.

York Harbor Inn presents donation to Waban Projects
Greg Silva of the York Harbor Inn recently presented a donation of $5,480 to Neal Meltzer, executive director of Waban Projects, in front of the Fraser-Ford Child Development Center on Country Club Road in Sanford.
The funds were a portion of the over $11,000 raised at the “Light It Up Blue” event that drew attention to autism.
York Harbor Inn hosted the charity event to kick off Autism Awareness Month and to raise funds for Waban and other local New England Autism charities. It was the second year the inn has hosted the event.

Modern Woodmen’s event packs 20,000 meals
Scott M. McDonald, regional director for Modern Woodmen, recently organized a meal-packing event that produced 20,000 meals, which have been donated to several area food pantries.
The event, which took place on June 25 at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Scarborough, supports Modern Woodmen’s Knock Out Hunger campaign, a national effort to prepare and donate 500,000 meals throughout the country.
“This is such an important project. I hope it drives others to contribute to their local food pantries and shelters,” McDonald said in a news release.
