PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. – Two bicyclists from Maine won Newton’s Revenge, the grueling 7.6-mile bike race to the summit of Mount Washington, on Saturday.
On the men’s side, Eric Follen, 40, of Sanford, completed the race in 54 minutes and 36 seconds. Stephanie Wetzel, 28, of Fryeburg, made her debut at the race winning the women’s title in 1 hour, 9 minutes.
Follen had finished second in the race in the last two years. This year he crossed the finish line two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Brandon Holden, 21, of Boxborough, Massachusetts, who was competing in the race for the first time. Third place went to James Piccoli, 23, of Montreal who had a time of 57:10.
Wetzel beat second-place finisher Kristen Gohr, 44, of Reading, Massachusetts, by more than four minutes. Darcie Murphy, 35, of Logan, Utah, came in third in 1:17:20.
Newton’s Revenge is the first of two bicycle races up the Mount Washington Auto Road each summer. The 43rd Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, a fundraiser for the Tin Mountain Conservation Center, is scheduled for Aug. 15.
