Five people from outside Maine are being held at York County Jail on $75,000 bail each after allegedly forcing their way into a Wells home at gunpoint Sunday night and stealing $2,300.

Police believe the men, all of whom were masked, targeted the resident and did not randomly choose the home.

Wells police were called to a Littlefield Road home at 11:17 p.m. for a report of a robbery. The victim said several masked men with guns and a knife stole $2,300.

The victim was able to give police a description of the getaway car and a partial Massachusetts license plate number, said Lt. Gerald Congdon.

An officer checked the Maine Turnpike and stopped a car matching that description minutes later at mile 11 in York, and ordered the men out of the car at gunpoint, Congdon said. Inside, police found guns and masks that matched those used in the robbery, he said.

The Maine State Police and officers from Ogunquit, York and Kittery helped Wells officers arrest the five suspects.

Charged with class A robbery are Anthony Arrendell, 28 and Marcos Hernandez, 30 both of Methuen, Massachusetts; Juan Andino-Tirado, 24 of Haverhill, Massachusetts; Carlos Diaz, 21 of Lawrence, Massachusetts and Javier Pagan-Gonzalez, 24 of Philadelphia.

The suspects made their initial appearance Monday in Springvale District Court, where their bail was raised from $10,000 to $75,000 each.

Additional charges may be brought by a grand jury, Congdon said.

Congdon would not discuss a possible motive for the robbery. When asked whether drugs might be involved, he declined to comment citing the ongoing investigation. Nobody was charged with any drug-related crimes, he said.

Nobody was injured in the initial incident or during the arrest.
