Michael Wilson, former chief financial officer for the state’s largest school district, has been hired as Biddeford’s finance director, the city announced Tuesday.

Wilson, of Falmouth, will begin his position in Biddeford on Feb. 8. He will replace current finance director Curt Koehler, who is retiring after working for the city for 17 years.

Wilson served as CFO for Portland Public Schools from 2010 to 2014 and most recently was vice president of finance and operations for networks for Regional Healthcare Improvement. He also served as an attorney for nearly 25 years.

“He was part of the team that turned around the financial problems that the Portland school system faced,” Mayor Alan Casavant said in a prepared statement.

Wilson was among the nearly 40 people who applied for the finance director position, according to city officials. City Manager Jim Bennett said the hiring process included separate interviews with a steering committee that included citizens, the entire city management team and the City Council.

“The combination of his experience, expertise and leadership style was a great fit with the existing management team,” Bennett said.

Wilson said in a prepared statement that he is excited to join the Biddeford city staff.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to be part of a great team as the city ushers in its next phase of growth,” he said.
