Leonard and Rosemary Wallace hadn’t planned to go to the State House on Thursday but the Steuben couple’s actions last week earned them an escort to Augusta courtesy of a pair of state troopers.

The Wallaces went to Augusta, where lawmakers rose and applauded the couple for saving a mother and her two children after their car plunged into Fox Pond in Hancock County on Saturday.

The Wallaces had gone to the pond to try their luck fishing for trout. While there were fishing from the bank, a car went off Route 182 on a sharp curve and flew over Leonard Wallace’s head. He waded out to the partially submerged car and pulled 2-month-old Tanner Kjenstad, 3-year-old Georgia Parker and the children’s mother, 38-year-old Mandi Parker of Jonesboro, to safety.

Maine State Police credited the Wallaces with saving three lives.

Parker, who was returning from a methadone clinic in Bangor, was later charged with driving after suspension of her license.
