Before retiring in 2005, I worked in California toward ensuring access to medical care for people living with HIV/AIDS.
AIDS advocates throughout the country were in awe of Maine for its rapid and compassionate response, which did, in fact, ensure access through the state and, in Portland, local action.
The move to close the India Street clinic seems to me to be an unfortunate retreat from ensuring appropriate specialized care for those facing the greatest barriers to access.
