KITTERY – Hundreds of moose hunting enthusiasts will come to Kittery in two weeks in the hopes of beating the odds that they will score a hunting permit.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the annual moose permit lottery drawing will be held on June 11 at Kittery Trading Post.

State biologists recommended that permits be cut by 24 percent to help preserve the moose population and meet public demand to view the animals in the wild.

That reduced the number of permits to 2,140. More than 55,000 people have applied for a permit.

The department has moved the lottery location around the state since 1999. Before that, it was always held in Augusta. Recent years have brought the drawing to Scarborough, Greenville, Presque Isle and Bethel.
