SOUTH PORTLAND — The Big Apple convenience store and gas station at 334 Cottage Road will soon be demolished and replaced with a slightly larger building.

The city issued demolition and building permits Monday for the project, which the Planning Board approved in September.

C.N. Brown Co. of South Paris plans to replace the existing 2,100-square-foot store with a 2,400-square-foot store. The company replaced the underground fuel storage tanks last year.

The improvements follow the opening of a new Cumberland Farms convenience store in Cape Elizabeth and coincide with the ongoing redevelopment of the former South Portland Armory into an Irving gas station and a Rusty Lantern convenience store.

The Big Apple was closed and the property was fenced in on Monday.
