Maine’s version of a late-night variety show, “The Nite Show with Danny Cashman,” is moving to an earlier time and planning to do a rare Portland-area taping in late January.

“The Nite Show,” which has been on stations statewide for about six years, will begin airing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays on Portland station WGME-13, starting Jan. 21. The show, which is taped in the Bangor area, will continue to air in southern Maine at 10:30 p.m. Saturdays on WPFO-23 and at 1 a.m. Sundays on WGME. The show is also shown on stations in Bangor and Presque Isle.

Cashman, a public relations professional based in Bangor, not only hosts and writes the show, he handles the business of it as well. With some stations, he has split ad sales revenue to get his shows on the air, and sometimes he has paid for air time and sells the ads himself.

Cashman grew up a big fan of David Letterman, and “The Nite Show” reflects that. The shows begin with Cashman telling jokes, in a monologue, then sitting behind a desk and interviewing guests from Maine and across the country. They have included singer-songwriter Dave Mallett, Gov. Paul LePage, radio comic Rob Bartlett and pro baseball player Matt Stairs.

In announcing the new time slot on WGME, a CBS affiliate, Cashman said the positive response to the show from viewers and advertisers in southern Maine is growing.

Cashman said that, in conjunction with the new earlier time slot in southern Maine, a live taping of “The Nite Show” will be held Jan. 27 at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center, 471 Stroudwater St, Westbrook.

Two episodes will be recorded before an audience, beginning at 6 p.m., and are scheduled to air Feb. 4 and 11. Tickets to the taping are free and available on the show’s website, theniteshowmaine.com.
