Kevin Thomas does not always write about baseball. It just seems that way, starting with his early days covering spring training for the St. Petersburg Times, to his current role of bi-locating at both Hadlock Field and Fenway Park, reporting on the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox. In the off-season, he still writes about baseball, while venturing to hockey rinks and basketball arenas, especially when it comes to the University of Maine and local colleges. Thomas has received awards for his work, but his greatest prize is home, which includes one patient wife, nine children and an aging chocolate Labrador.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – He is the last unsettled piece of the Fab Five from the 2005 draft. Michael Bowden is hoping to finally take a major league leap. Bowden, 25, lowered his ERA to 2.00 after pitching a scoreless ninth inning Thursday in a 3-2 loss to Toronto. It was a grinding effort for […]

Red Sox Notebook: Beckett’s turn to strut talent
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The top of the rotation seems to be purring along. A day after Jon Lester dazzled with 10 strikeouts over seven shutout innings, Josh Beckett cruised along Tuesday, throwing a one-hit shutout over five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. He struck out five. “I thought he threw a lot of […]

On Baseball: Iglesias fields setback flawlessly
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Boston Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine walked into the clubhouse Tuesday morning, looked to his right and laughed. Dustin Pedroia was again razzing Jose Iglesias (if Pedroia does not give you a hard time, there is something wrong). But the fun would soon end for Iglesias. Valentine motioned for Iglesias to […]

On Baseball: Forget the numbers, Bard showed he’s a starter

Red Sox Notebook: Aviles: no plans to come up short
DUNEDIN, Fla. – There were no highlights causing oohs and aahs from the shortstop Sunday afternoon. All Mike Aviles did was field his position solidly, while going 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Aviles is batting .333, having played 14 games this spring for the Boston Red Sox. His competition […]

On Baseball: Stepping into spring with high hopes
TAMPA, Fla. – The heat and humidity are the same. The palm trees still sway in the wind. And March in Florida still means baseball games that don’t count, at least in terms of wins and losses. Of course, they mean something, in terms of teams getting ready, and figuring out who is on the […]
