Poll puts King in lead by 26.5 percentage points

In the race for the open U.S. Senate seat, Charlie Summers has 23.8 percent and Cynthia Dill 12.1 percent.

Angus King has a 26.5 percentage-point lead in the race for Maine's open U.S. Senate seat, according to a new independent poll.

King leads Republican Charlie Summers 50.3 percent to 23.8 percent, according to the Pan Atlantic Group SMS Group's Omnibus Poll, a periodic statewide public opinion survey.

Democrat Cynthia Dill has 12.1 percent, according to the poll, while 13.8 percent of respondents said they were undecided.

Pan Atlantic did random live interviews with 400 likely voters Sept. 24-28. The poll has a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.

The Pan Atlantic poll shows a larger lead for King, an independent, than other recent polls, most of which have used automated phone calls.

The new poll's results include voters who say they are undecided but leaning toward a candidate, something that's not typically measured in automated surveys.

The poll says Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree leads Republican Jon Courtney in the 1st Congressional District race, 56.5 percent to 24.2 percent.

In the 2nd District, Democratic Rep Mike Michaud leads Republican Kevin Raye, 52 percent to 32.2 percent, according to the poll.
