PORTLAND — Mercy Hospital said it is seeking a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers related to its plan to expand its existing hospital complex on the Fore River Parkway.
Mercy aims to fill about 3.49 acres of freshwater wetland adjacent to the Fore River in order to complete the expansion of the medical complex. The expansion will include the addition of 250,000 square feet of space to house the emergency department, an expanded acute care center, hospital support services and medical office space.
To compensate for the project’s impact on aquatic resources, Mercy proposes a $834,156 contribution to the Maine Natural Resource Mitigation Fund, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
Mercy is in talks to be acquired by the Steward Health Care System, a for-profit Massachusetts hospital chain.
Mercy opened its Fore River campus in 2008. It has planned to move most of its operations there from its State Street location by 2018 to coincide with the hospital’s centennial. Mercy began operating in 1918, when the Sisters of Mercy started treating residents in Portland at Queen’s Hospital during a flu epidemic.
