Letter to the editor: Those who take Bible as gospel can’t cherry-pick

In his letter to the editor Jan. 9 (“Bible reader disputes claim that people can be born gay”), Dr. Frederick H. Giese quotes the Bible, Leviticus 18:22-23, to support his bigotry against gays.

He has every right to believe in it along with the right to be a bigot. However, he conveniently leaves out an important part of that passage, which states, “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.”

So one can logically assume from his devotion to the absolute word of the Bible and Leviticus that Dr. Giese thinks gays should be killed. After all, that’s what the Bible says.

Here’s some more tidbits from Leviticus:

20:9 – “If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.”

20:10 – “If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife – with the wife of his neighbor – both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.”

The Bible has been used to support bigotry for ages, including the justification of slavery:

Leviticus 25:44-45 – “Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.”

If one is going to use the Bible as the absolute authority on everything, then one has to accept everything in the Bible, not cherry-pick it.
