As a retired couple who have been dining out with greater frequency, we were amazed and upset by the Maine Restaurant, Maine Innkeepers and Maine Tourism associations’ recent stand against increased oversight of restaurants in our state (“Maine restaurant groups: No inspections by localities,” Jan. 29).

We can’t imagine why any self-respecting, aboveboard organizations would not welcome improving a process that would help identify unsafe establishments that put customers’ health at risk.

The associations’ attitude, we feel, helps create suspicion and a lack of confidence in the integrity of an industry that is becoming a larger and larger part of Maine’s economy.

We hope these organizations will reconsider their attitude toward a bill that attempts to protect not only customers but also, at the same time, their own ethical members.
