Sanford Key Club attends district conference

Members of the Sanford High School Key Club recently attended the District Educational Conference of the New England and Bermuda District, held in Springfield, Mass.

Club members who attended the event participated in caucuses and workshops, elections and programs where Key Club officers from throughout New England and Bermuda learned more about Key Club and the many organizations it supports.

Colin Patterson, one of Sanford’s current Bulletin editors, was elected to the position of New England District Bulletin editor. He will have the responsibility of publishing the NED Magazine, the YanKey.

The Sanford High School Key Club brought home several awards and honors.

The team placed second for its major emphasis project: local Backpack Program and Clothing Closet.

It also placed third for its scrapbook and news bulletins.

Club president Ellie Garnsey won the outstanding president award.

Club adviser Suzanne Patterson won the outstanding adviser award.

And club secretary Nisha Patel won the outstanding secretary award.

Youthlinks program gets donation from The First

The two Rockland offices of The First recently donated $606.12 to Broadreach Family & Community Services’ Youthlinks program.

For the past 19 years, employees of The First have dressed casually on Fridays, donating funds for that privilege to support charitable organizations in communities where they provide financial services. At the end of each month, a donation is presented to an employee-nominated, nonprofit organization.

This donation to Youthlinks will help Broadreach Family & Community Services continue to offer a variety of after-school and summer programs for middle and high school students.

Day One receives grant of $24,000 from United Way

Day One has been awarded a one-year grant from United Way of York County totaling $24,000 to support the prevention and treatment of adolescent substance abuse in southern Maine.

The funds will support Day One’s Natural Helpers of Maine program at Bonny Eagle High School and the residential treatment program in Hollis and Buxton.

The Natural Helpers program is an award-winning, volunteer-driven peer listening and support program rooted in the knowledge that a natural network of teens helping teens exists in every school.

The residential treatment program founded by Day One in 1973 to address youth substance abuse serves 30 to 40 clients annually, providing a holistic approach to treat substance abuse for boys and girls ages 13-18.

Thornton’s math team wins third place at state contest

The Thornton Academy math team won third place recently at the Maine State Math Meet at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The state competition included six individual rounds, two relay rounds and two team rounds, with nearly 100 schools attending.

Xinyi “Lucy” Chen was the first-place junior and was presented a silver bowl and a $300 cash prize for being the highest scoring student overall in the state for the entire 2013-14 season.

Tristan Falardeau earned a fifth-place award for sophomores and Zihan “Winkle” Qi earned a 12th-place medal for seniors.

Ten students competed for Thornton Academy, which has been coached for the last six years by math teacher Marsha Snyder.

Snyder was one of 14 nominees for the 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year Award.

Chen and Qi also have earned spots on the Maine team, which selects the most successful students in the state to participate at a regional event in Pennsylvania in June.

Falardeau and Jiaming “Frank” Zhang have been named alternates for that competition.

Elinor Grover, 88, receives 2014 senior service award

Elinor Grover, 88, of Wells is the Maine recipient of the Home Instead Senior Care network’s 2014 Salute to Senior Service Award.

Grover was recognized for her dedicated community service, including her faithful management of the St. Mary’s Food Pantry in Wells.

She volunteers at least 20 hours each month to keep the pantry running and does everything from scheduling and ordering, to working at the pantry each Thursday when it’s open to the community.

As one of 50 state winners, Grover earned $500 for her charity of choice – donated by Home Instead Inc.

Grover also will have a spot on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame on SalutetoSeniorService.com.

Hannaford bag sale to aid food banks in Northeast

Hannaford Supermarkets announced a new program that will provide monthly income to food banks across the Northeast and eliminate the need for an estimated 1.5 million disposable shopping bags next year.

Durable vinyl “Fight Hunger” shopping bags that cost $1.29 each are now available in the checkout area of every Hannaford store.

For each bag sold, Hannaford will donate 25 cents to a local food bank and help provide meals to people in need.

Hannaford expects to sell hundreds of thousands of the bags a year, providing a new income stream for food banks.
