Workshop will teach how to build poultry travel cages

Building poultry travel cages will be the focus of a workshop, sponsored by University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County and the Maine Poultry Growers Association from 9 to noon Saturday.

Participants will build wire poultry travel cages and UMaine Extension veterinarian Dr. Anne Lichtenwalner will talk about poultry health.

The workshop will be held at the Extension office, at 75 Clearwater Drive, Suite 104. Cost is $30 per person and $25 for MPGA members.

Community lunch social and book swap Wednesday

A Community Lunch Social and Book Swap will be held from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Otisfield Community Hall, at Route 121.

Lunch items will include soup, sandwiches, salad, dessert, coffee, tea and punch.

Those with transportation needs to the event should call Nancy Coombs at 627-4374.

Historical society celebrates opening of summer season

The Falmouth Historical Society will celebrate "Opening Day" for its sixth annual summer season beginning with a flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Falmouth Heritage Museum, 60 Woods Road.

Festivities will include an invocation by the Rev. Deborah Tate Breault and keynote speech by State Rep. Mary Nelson at 10:15 a.m., a performance by the local ukulele group The Flukes at 10:30 a.m., a talk by local antique dealer Colleen Donovan at 11 a.m., reminiscences on the history of the Falmouth Fire Department by retired firefighters Howard Rice and Ted Vail and a talk by Robert Shafto titled "History of Falmouth Land."

A free lunch of hot dogs, baked beans, sodas and cookies or brownies will be offered.

Pine needle basket workshop Wednesday

The workshop "The Art and Craft of Pine Needle Baskets" will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at York Public Library at 15 Long Sands Road.

Presenter David Brinkman will teach about traditional and contemporary baskets, with emphasis on coiled baskets made from long leaf pine needles from the southeastern United States.

Examples of Brinkman's pine needle baskets are on display at the library through Aug. 31.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch for this luncheon series lecture.

Lake association plans giant yard sale Saturday

The 24th annual Bauneg Beg Lake Association Giant Yard Sale will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fish and Game Club on Route 4.

This is a major fundraiser to help fund water quality projects and lake monitoring activities throughout the year.

There will be several raffles and food will be available.

Volunteers are still needed to work the event, especially the afternoon shift, and donations of useful and saleable items may be dropped off at the club Thursday and Friday from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
