A home in this charming enclave off Shore Road, on the edge of Pond Cove, last sold in 2008 – not because the housing market slowed, but because people so rarely move from this neighborhood. Here there are not only stunning ocean views, but also deeded waterfront access – along one path, to rocky shoreline with excellent striper fishing; down another path, to the crescent of private sandy beach for which lovely Pond Cove is named.
Altogether, this spacious Colonial, set on a knoll and looking out over the rooftops to the broad Atlantic, represents a rare opportunity to own in a splendid location.
The home was built in 1941, and expanded in 2005 with the addition of a third story that constitutes a huge master suite. Its bedroom, which has a skylight and a daylight walk-in closet with fold-down ironing board, provides magnificent coastal views to the east. Across the landing, the expansive office has its own natural-light closet, and of course its own views. Floors are hardwood. The sumptuous bath, shared Jack-and-Jill fashion, has radiant heat and is outfitted with an oversized glass shower with seat, twin oval sinks set in a gorgeously patterned granite vanity, private toilet enclosure, and jet tub.
The original part of the house was modeled on an 18th-century home in Limerick, and has great early-New England character, as the granite porch with foot-scrapers, and the flanking lilacs coming into bloom, suggest. The many Indian shutters; the mantel on the back-to-front living room’s long, brick, wood-burning fireplace; and even the andirons and other hardware (you can hang a kettle or simmer a stew) were salvaged from an antique home in Gorham.
Floors are wide pumpkin-pine. Across the broad hall, the bright dining room has leaf-patterned wainscoting, and seasonal water views shared by the kitchen, thanks to a window-sized pass-through. The just-renovated kitchen retains its original, hand-made custom cabinetry. Completing the first floor are a half-bath, and a screen porch overlooking the sunny back yard. On the second floor are three big bedrooms, and a cool bath with marble tile and vanity, and cast-iron tub with sliding-glass shower doors.
The partially finished basement includes a carpeted room with double closet, a utility room/workshop, a big laundry room, and a direct-entry garage that could readily be converted into a mudroom. The good-sized lot is like a small park, with its birches, lawn, gardens and stone walls, and offers a number of “outdoor rooms” to relax and enjoy.
