PORTLAND — Playing just three quarters, Martha Veroneau scored 22 points to lead fourth-ranked Waynflete to a 73-36 victory over No.13 Carrabec in the preliminary round of the Class C West girls' basketball tournament.
The Flyers (16-3) forced 41 turnovers to advance to the quarterfinals at the Augusta Civic Center next Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Dirigo-Sacopee Valley game.
Waynflete broke the game open with a 21-0 run that started late in the first quarter to expand a 14-9 lead to 35-9.
Rhiannan Jackson and Leigh Fernandez each scored 12 points for Waynflete. Carrabec finished 5-14, losing its last nine games.
