25 years of athletes

The Portland Press Herald has been honoring High School athletes for 25 years.

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram names a player of the year in each high school sport throughout the school year. Each of these players of the year is invited to an All-Sports Awards Ceremony to be honored for their achievements, and to be on hand when we announce our male and female Athletes of the Year.

Girls' basketball: Allie Clement, McAuley High

Best player, best team, and she did it with a fracture
Allie Clement couldn't even practice because of the pain, and still led McAuley to all its goals.

Boys' basketball: Garret Beal, Jonesport-Beals High

Motivated by memory, elevated by plenty of talent
Garet Beal of Jonesport-Beals had a season that would have delighted his dad, who died last July.

Girls' hockey: Mary Morrison, Greely High

Telegram All-State Hockey: Girls: Morrison moves Rangers to more postseason success
The blueliner is only a sophomore but already a dominating presence at both ends of the ice.

Boys' hockey: Ted Hart, Greely High

Like his older brothers Kevin and Brian, Ted Hart seems destined to play post-high school hockey.

Girls' indoor track: Kate Hall, Lake Region High

Not just strong in Maine, but Hall's a regional champion
Kate Hall of Lake Region came through against strong competition, and is still just a sophomore.

Boys' indoor track: Jared Bell, Deering High

Bell wanted to be better, and he already was the best
Jared Bell of Deering changed his technique in the shot put and added more than four feet.

Girls' swimming: Sarah Easterling, Greely High

Easterling takes place among state's all-time greats
Easterling set school records in six of the eight individual swimming events and was a member of all three school-record relays.

Boys' swimming: Trebor Lawton, Cheverus High

Humble as they come, Lawton leads by example
Trebor Lawton, who led Cheverus to its first Class A title, is a repeat choice as Swimmer of the Year.

Girls' skiing: Elise Luce, Mt. Abram High

From a family of skiers, to top of the high school hill
Elise Luce of Mt. Abram is the fourth of four Luce girls who have excelled, coached by their father.

Boys' skiing: Silas Eastman, Fryeburg Academy

Eastman wins with legs, with a big assist from his head
Silas Eastman of Fryeburg Academy analyzes the course and opposition, and it's paid off well.

Wrestling: Dan DelGallo, Gardiner Area High

Building on family's success
Gardiner's Daniel DelGallo combined talent and hard work to become a feared wrestler, like his brothers.

Boys' cross country: Dan Curts, Ellsworth

Friendly rivalry helped push Ellsworth's Curts to new heights
Dan Curts narrowly edged Silas Eastman at the Telegram All-State meet, and for Runner of the Year honors.

Girls' cross country: Bethanie Brown, Waterville

A consummate performer, on both the trails and the stage
Bethanie Brown said she still hasn't mastered cross country, but she certainly proved herself the best schoolgirl runner in Maine.

Field hockey: Kristy Bernatchez, Messalonskee

Goal-oriented Bernatchez bound for UNC
Once known as Katie's younger sister, the Messalonskee senior found the net 47 times.

Andrew Libby, Thornton Academy

The Trojan work horse
Andrew Libby, Thornton Academy's Mr. Everything, is the Maine Sunday Telegram Player of the Year.

Boys' golf: Reese McFarlane, Cape Elizabeth

So very good, getting better
Reese McFarlane of Cape Elizabeth, just a sophomore, was the Class B individual champion.

Girls' golf: Alice Hwang, Bangor

Bangor golfer loves the game, and it shows
Alice Hwang played one season on the Bangor boys' team and won a girls' state title.

Volleyball: Mariah Hebert, Biddeford

Hands down, Hebert dominated in Class A
The Biddeford senior took her coach's prodding to heart and reached her potential.

Boys' soccer: J.P. White, Falmouth

Ahead in the game with a head for the game
Playing soccer with his brother, who now plays for Bowdoin College, helped J.P. White develop a passion for the game.
