Maine Colleges: Polar Bears ride fast start to win

BRUNSWICK - Sara Binkhorst scored all 21 of her points in the first half Sunday as Bowdoin built a big lead on the way to a 79-64 women's basketball victory over Emmanuel.

Binkhorst, a freshman making her first start, was 4 for 4 from 3-point range and 9 for 9 from the free-throw line, helping the Polar Bears (9-3) open a 51-28 lead.

Emmanuel (7-4) rallied the second half, closing to within 69-63 with 2:30 left, but Bowdoin made 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch.

Binkhorst also had seven assists and six steals. Ellery Gould finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals, Anna Prohl scored 14 points, and Jill Henrikson had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

COLBY 65, HAMILTON 54: Rachael Mack had 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals to lead the Mules (9-1, 1-0 NESCAC) past the Continentals (5-7, 0-2) at Clinton, N.Y.

Colby led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Hamilton cut the deficit to 26-25 at halftime. The Mules then opened the second half with nine straight points and led by at least seven the rest of the way.

Jil Vaughan added 13 points and nine rebounds for Colby, and Jacky McLaughlin scored 12 points.

HAMILTON 70, COLBY 62: Greg Newton scored 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting as the Continentals (11-4, 1-1 NESCAC) beat the Mules (4-8, 0-1) at Clinton, N.Y.

Kyle Donovan paced Colby with 19 points.

MEN'S HOCKEY

SALEM STATE 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Ryan Sutcliffe made 32 saves, including 18 in the third period, as the Vikings (6-5-1) held off the Huskies (4-5-2) at Gorham.

Ben Pearl scored a power-play goal in the third period for USM, but the Huskies were just 1 for 12 with the man advantage.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 2, MAINE 1: Danielle Ward's power-play goal in the second period was the only score for the Black Bears (10-8-5, 4-6-1 Hockey East) in a loss to the Terriers (11-9-1, 6-4) at Orono.
