Charlie Raybine, a fifth grader, and Ryan Bickler, a third grader, won the overall Mixed Grades Division in the third annual Scarborough 2 x 2 Blacktop Basketball Tournament. The tourney, with a March Madness theme, was played on a private court and featured ll teams.

Raybine also teamed with Matt Hartl to win the Fifth Grade Division.

Milani Hicks and Brendan Kane won the Fourth Grade Division.

This year, two new awards were established and given to honor two Scarborough basketball stalwarts who are both members of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. The awards, given by tournament organizer Scarborough Youth Sports Forum, recognize Edward “Packy” McFarland, the SHS boys hoop coach in the l960s and early 70s and also SHS Athletic Director. SYSF also honored McFarland’s son, Edward “Bo” McFarland, a standout at SHS and later at Bowdoin College.

The Bo McFarland Award was presented to the Best Skilled Player in the tournament – Alec Cohen, a fifth grader at Wentworth School.

The newly established Packy McFarland Award was presented to the team showing the Best Sportsmanship – and the award went to the duo of Sam Freeman and Matt Hartl.

“Matt and Sam are two kids who like to play. They seem to play anywhere any time. They were both fierce competitors, and also gentlemen. They lost one very hard fought game in overtime, never breathed a word about the loss, and went out in the next game and gave their best performance. This is the type of player Packy McFarland liked best in his days at SHS – kids playing hard, and for the right reasons,” said SYSF organizer Dan Warren.
