Winning three consecutive state championships generally means that a team is loaded with all-star athletes.

That certainly is the case for the Scarborough Red Storm girls track team. The winners of the last three Class A state titles are well represented on the 2008 SMAA all-star track squad.

While the Red Storm didn’t win any individual state titles at the Class A state championship meet earlier this month, the members of the girls team were still among the top in many of the individual events.

Making the SMAA first team as individuals was: Emelia Scheemaker, who was selected for the long jump and Annie Mills, who was named as an all-star for the 110 hurdles. Mills was also selected to the SMAA all-academic team.

Additionally, the Red Storm’s 400-meter relay team of Jenny Snyder, Rachelle Greene, Scheemaker and Mills and the 3,200-meter relay team of Whitney Chamberlain, Abby Click, Megan Summerson and Kelsey Chick were named as first team all-stars.

Scarborough also had several representatives on the all-SMAA second team. Christy Manning was honored for her accomplishments in two events, the shot put and the discus; Scheemaker was named a second team all-star for the triple jump and Sarah Gordon was named to the team for the pole vault.

But that wasn’t the end of the honors for the Red Storm. Devon Leighton (pole vault), Greene (100-meter dash) and Chamberlain (800-meter run) all received honorable mentions from the SMAA.

On the boys side, the Red Storm’s Nate Hathaway was the highest-honored athlete for Scarborough. He was named to the all-SMAA first team for the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. He was also selected as a first team all-star as a member of two relay teams, the 1,600 and the 3,200-meters with teammates Brad Nakanishi, Scott Delano and Sam Chick.

Nakanishi was the only other Scarborough boy to be named as an individual first team all-star. He was selected for the pole vault.

The Red Storm had two boys selected to the all-SMAA second team. Chick for the triple jump and Craig Robinson for the 1,600-meter run. Scarborough’s Ben Abrahams was recognized with an honorable mention in the pole vault.

One other local athlete was also honored by the SMAA. South Portland’s Brian Huynh was named to the all-academic team.
